i am starting to work with an investor who is in the water cleaning business. his firm travels around to small towns and cities in china, and helps cleanse their water. intrigued, as i am constantly hearing about the amount of pollution in chinese cities, i ask him if there was any water that he could not clean? he smiles, and lets me know that most polluted water, in fact all that he comes across, can be cleaned, but what he cannot do is create water. he goes on to tell me about a city he had recently visited in north west china that had invited him up to pitch on a project. upon arriving, he felt something was off when they kept asking him about recycling the current water in the system (something that Isreal does quite well and will be important in our future) but then told him bluntly they would run out of water pretty soon. the city had over one million people in it, and the idea that they will one day turn on their tap and nothing would come out worried the officials greatly. cape town, south africa, faces this day zero in a number of months. a city that has roughly the population of los angeles is on the verge of running out of water. year after year of severe drought, coupled with raising populations and poor city planning.
it sits on the coast, and in a few months residents will look out at water water everywhere, but not a drop to drink.
