deceit is part of reality. just look at our films, our books or our stories. these days we are warning that we are entering into a new world where we cannot tell the truth from fiction and at some point in time, fairly soon, it will be impossible to tell what has and what hasn’t happened. deep fakes are getting to the point where reality will bend and what you will be presented with on the screen will be hard to figure out if it is real or not. a moment that many feel will shift society, but it might have always been there.
as we preached in our churches, scared our children with tales of monster and warned of the ever closer end of times, we have been weaving fact with fantasy for as long as we have been able to communicate. floating around on a firey rock in the middle of it all, what else was there to do but play make believe. we are far from knowing what it is we are headed, when it will end and what the point of it all is. we are all making it up, some of us buy into it and others dont. deep fakes are not gonna change our minds, we believe what we see, what we feel, what we know.
i find as i get older i believe less. purposely forgetting some of the things i thought i knew, nothing seems imagined or real but simply temporary, like a dream or aberration, a lost object i no longer hold, a lost friend i no longer remember. what is real for me is different then from someone sitting across from me, coming at it from a different angle, background and setting, reality is what we make it. good or bad, real of make believe, if it fits our narrative we take it and make it part of our lives. the deceit that we use to feel good from time to time is real, even if it is made up all of lies.
