the storms get bigger. |
there is something enjoyable about hanging out with people that are not achieving so much. a friend of mine has a middle-aged man living in his walk-in-closet, i prefer to compare my life to that man as opposed to comparing it to my other friend i was out with yesterday who is conquering businesses and owning yachts and helicopters. the middle-aged grown man who cannot pay for his dinners at time seem like a better barometer for me to gauge my progress opposed to my other friend who just had dinner with the rothschilds.
my son also has this habit, when we scold him for getting low marks, he is quick to note the other new classmates who scored lower. we look in the direction that makes us feel good. reassuring this time in our lives, it is bad, but not that bad.
i am certain the man in the closet looks at others with the same vision. he sees people on the street and thinks of the comforts of the closet, all of us on our mountains, playing these games of comparisons in order to create a sense of comfort in all this mess.
